Braid was originally an acoustic duo formed around early 1998 consisting of Sam Wilson on Vocals and Gareth Keeton on Acoustic Guitar, later taking on Tom Greenwood, who they had met at college, as second Guitarist. In late 1999, ex Sand guitarist Nick Millbank joined them on Drums.
They continued to gig as they had always done since forming as a duo, playing pubs around Bradford city whilst increasing the amount of original songs in their mostly covers set list. At a gig sometime in 1999, they asked Jo Sprint to join them on Bass. Like Nick, Jo was an ex Sand guitarist who had been along to watch many of Braid's gigs.
Now a five piece, they continued working on their original material as well as covering some of the greatest Rock N Roll music ever written, and playing everywhere they could. They recorded their first demo in 2000 at Potz'N'Panz Studios in Bradford, and then another in 2001 at SunnyBank Studios in Ripponden.
One day the acoustic guitar was replaced with an electric. It was now 2001, the band had grown up, the covers were dropped, and 'We Are Thieves' was born.
