Sand was a five piece from Bradford formed in 1997 who played progressive, experimental and often instrumental stoner rock.
Formed by guitarist friends Haydn and Jo in late 1997 with the help of Richard, Sand was one of the first so called 'Stoner Rock' bands hailing from Bradford. Shortly after, the addition of Richard, Nick and Chris, finished the line-up.
All sharing a love for bands like Kyuss and Clutch, as well as most of the grunge scene, which would be the basis for their sound. They focused on writing catchy songs with fuzzed out riffs and nonsense lyrics as well as getting nicely stoned whenever possible.
Sand was a square one affair with none of the members having any previous band experience. They would meet once a week in factories around Bradford City to practice and to slowly get to grips with making music.
Numerous low key gigs got the band a fair amount of buzz as a sleazy low-fi stoner band. If not for their dirty Orange Amp & Big Muff tone, then definitely for getting completely wasted before going on stage and making it apparent.
Two Demo CD's were recorded in the life of the band. The first was done by Haydn, Nick and Jo playing, recording and producing between them selves. The second was done entirely by Jo and Nick which led them to coin the studio partnership name "The Green Car Legacy". This is where the songs shined. A number of guests would appear on these recordings.
The band would later be divided between members wanting to go in different directions, so a split was inevitable. In late 1999 that's exactly what happened.
Haydn and Chris went on to form 'The Possessions' and later 'Harmacy'. Jo and Nick would join acoustic duo 'Braid' which became a full five piece. 'Braid' would later hone their musical influences and talents to become 'We Are Thieves'.
